The most sacred of Hindu shrines, Kashi Vishawanath at Varanasi is the nerve centre of our cultural and religious history. Varanasi or Benaras is the oldest living human civilizations with a history as old as 3500 years. Kashi Vishwanath is among the twelve Jyotirlingam.
Hindu mythology has it that once after an argument over the supremacy of creation between Brahma (the creator), Vishnu (the saver) and Shiva (the destroyer), Lord Shiva pierced through the three parts of the earth as a huge endless pillar of light, hence Jyotirlingam.
The holy temple of Kashi Vishwanath is located on the Western Ghats of the holy river Ganges. It is believed that even holy river Ganga takes at unusual bend at Varanasi, in salutation to Lord Shiva. It is the most revered Hindu shrine. The temple complex consists of a series of smaller shrines, near the river. The linga of the main deity is known by the name of "Vishwanatha or Vishweshwara" meaning the "Ruler of the universe” and is 60 cm tall and 90 cm in circumference housed in a silver altar.
